On The Hunt: Lighthouse

At Unicorn Hunt we like to get to know the companies that are hiring through our platform. For the first in our new series, “On The Hunt”, we caught up with Lighthouse.

Unicorns love branded pencils… but can’t use them due to lack of opposable thumbs.

Explain what Lighthouse does… to your Grandparents (ie keep it simple & jargon-free!)

Lighthouse is a digital design and product development agency. We work with entrepreneurs and businesses to build anything from simple websites up to the platforms powering digital products and services. We work with them to decide how to get the best return on their investment, and then design and build the result!

What’s the company culture like?

Lighthouse is professional but relaxed — we’re a creative agency so getting top-notch work done well is more important than punching the clock. We all go out for lunch on the company every Friday, and have a fridge dedicated to beers and other treats. We have “show and tell”s where people teach everyone else about something new they’ve discovered, internal hack days where we all build new product ideas and creative days out where we leave the office and try something completely new! We do have occasional nights out, and even run our own events.

What’s Lighthouse’s ambition?

We aim to increase our influence rather than our size. We find we add the most value when we work with entrepreneurs or even established businesses to prototype, evaluate & validate their idea, then build out the product & remain involved as it develops & evolves.

Our vision is to empower people and supercharge ideas.

What is your one piece of advice for startups that are hiring?

Wow that is a difficult one. Your first hire(s) will make or break the company, so take this process as seriously as you can afford to.

My piece of advice: You will go through thick and thin with your first hires, so make sure you can definitely work with them. It might be prudent to choose someone you can work better with over someone with better technical skills.

What is your one piece of advice for job seekers when applying to your company?

Please read our job description in full and personalise the application to the job. Let your passion and personality show through and don’t worry if that makes it less formal.

Why the crazy last question!?!?

Finally, if your company was a tea time treat what would it be and why?

We would be a pack of freshly baked cookies. The sort that you bring back and mean to only have one but they’re so good you end up polishing off the lot in 15 minutes.

Thanks team and happy hunting!
