Started in 2015 by Penny Klein and Rose Dagul, The Surround is a platform for improvisation and collaboration for emerging and established artists working across a wide spectrum of music and live performance.

As part of Lighthouse’s Last Dance: Re-imagined Futures programme The Surround will present a special edition co-curated with Sarah Gillett on Friday 11 May. Lighthouse caught up with Sarah to hear more.

What’s your event about?

Inspired by science fiction, space exploration and visions of the future, The Surround x The Re-Imagined is for anyone making work within the wide parameters of music and performance. The night will involve a ‘show and tell’ with specially invited artists, a facilitated conversation with the artists and audience, collaborative workshops and improvised performances.

What’s the inspiration behind your work?

The Surround began because we wanted a space where we could share what we were making, even if it still felt in flux. It’s a space where the process / the goo / the putty in between the solid things is made visible, enjoyed, and taken seriously.

Why should people come to The Surround x The Re-Imagined?

Come to see something unexpected, be part of a dialogue and create something in collaboration in a welcoming, safe environment.

What should people coming along expect?

Openness, honesty and integrity from performers, musicians and spoken word artists. We’d like people to bring a willingness to participate in positive conversations and creative collaborations about the future of art-making.

What will culture look like in the future?

We don’t know. But we feel the most important thing is to keep making and sharing — and questioning the reasons why we might feel uncomfortable doing that, whatever the space and time we are living in.

The Surround x The Re-Imagined takes place on Friday 11 May 2018, 5pm — 9pm at Lighthouse

Tickets are free, to register click here.

The Surround x The Re-Imagined is supported by Re-Imagine Europe, co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.
