Dr Nuccitelli, NYS licensed psychologist, cyberpsychology expert and internet safety educator speaks about online learning and how he wouldn’t want it to replace the bricks and mortar of a school building. For healthy development in children, social interaction is crucial, especially in much younger children, they need to learn how to communicate, connect and relate to other children, it is essential for their growth and developing their own identity and characters.

He is not saying online learning is wrong, he is saying that schools are still needed. Here is a short video to watch.

I can see the benefit of online learning, children being able to have more one-on-one time with a teacher, especially those who are a little slower at learning. I am not saying that there is anything wrong with them — absolutely not — I was a slow learner and needed additional help in school. These days, classrooms are filled with anything up to 40 children, with only 1 teacher, that does not seem logical. Those that need more help get left and are then seen as being stupid.

I grew up with two siblings and was therefore able to interact with them, but there are many children who grow up as the only child. Having an environment where they can meet and play with others is a necessity, to have a place they can go to and interact with other children of their own age.

What I love and value about seeing young children playing together is that there is no discrimination about colour or sex. If everything became online learning, it would not be the same, children need connection outside their own families. I also feel that with a focus on online learning, there is a higher risk of online exposure of children to online predators. And a high risk of a child being isolated which again, brings in risk of them seeking other forms of connection which could lead them to those who would take advantage of their situation for their own purpose, those who are predatory trolls.

There is another risk of having all learning online. At Lighthouse Global, we are very protective of the effects of online abuse that children experience, and the consequences of this abuse. Paul S. Waugh, Head Mentor, has experienced this first hand, and speaks out about how this needs to stop. Here is a video of Paul calling all parents to protect their children.
