Emergent: December 2019
This month’s collection includes inspiration from both a marathoner and a climber. I didn’t plan on featuring athletes this month, but it turned out that way.
There’s so much to learn from how elite athletes approach problems and overcome adversity, that it’s hard to not listen to their stories.
In between these stories, there’s a great article about learning to listen better — something I’m personally working on.
If you like what you see or have some suggestions, drop me a line at noah@paloalto.com.

1. This month’s thoughts on mindset
Inside the mind of NYC Marathon champ Mary Keitany
Although Mary Keitany did not win the NYC Marathon this past weekend (she got second), she is a highly decorated athlete and fierce competitor who has reassessed her way of looking at running and how she approaches the sport. Her new way of thinking and re-orientation to her sport is not just interesting reading for athletes. It will make you think about how you approach your career and how you find new meaning in work. Read the article.
2. This month’s thoughts on listening
The 5 Habits of Exceptionally Good Listeners
Like most people, I’m not a great listener. I’m a “solutions” person and, as I listen to people, my mind starts generating ideas and solutions to their problems. Most people are actually like this, which makes us not so great listeners. I’m trying to improve in this area and found this article with a few tips that should help. If you try any of the tips in the article, let me know how they work for you.
3. This month’s favorite book
The Push
This month, our company book club book is The Push: A Climber’s Search for the Path. We read a lot of “business” books in our book club, but stray away to adventure and sports books on occasion — this month is one of those occasions. You don’t have to be a climber or even know anything about climbing to enjoy Tommy Cladwell’s story. And, it turns out that you can read it with an eye to improve your leadership skills. Tommy’s story of perseverance is filled with inspiration for tackling any task.
