1. This month’s favorite podcast

The Pitch

If you want to be a fly on the wall as entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to real venture capitalists, give The Pitch a try. You’ll hear real pitches with real feedback from investors, and listen as investments happen. This podcast takes queues from Shark Tank to be sure, but it’s a better, more real version It’s worth a listen. Check it out.

2. This month’s favorite reading

How to avoid being a technician in other clothes

The articles this month follow a theme: transitioning from an entrepreneur, do-it-all-yourself, your hands are always dirty type of person to a manager of people. This path is almost inevitable if you’re growing a business successfully. One day you’re a “doer” and the next day you’re the boss, telling other people what to do. This article talks about that transition and the key traits you need to have to be successful.

How your schedule can make or break you

As you transition to management, you’ll certainly still be a “maker” at your company. Stradling the two worlds between maker and manager is extremely challenging, but a good schedule can make it work. Farnam Street has some interesting thoughts on how to make this work.

How to run fast, efficient meetings

Running your company well can hinge on running meetings well. This is crucial as you transition into a management role. This article from First Round Review is all you ever need to read on this topic.

3. This month’s favorite thing

Truly wireless headphones

This isn’t a hidden find, I’m afraid. And, I’ll admit that I was skeptical about this purchase. But, I went ahead and bought a pair of Apple’s AirPods. It turns out that I love them. The frustration of cord tangles is gone (obviously) and having truly wireless headphones makes me realize how much I hated untangling and then storing headphone cords.

Add the smarts of automatic pausing when you take one out of your ear and you have technology that lives up to Apple’s “it just works” slogan. I know… the sound isn’t the best and the shape isn’t for everyone, but I just love them. Get them here.
