Fostering an inclusive energy sector in Latin America and the Caribbean: meet the Energy Division at IDB
The FSR Lights on Women initiative and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) team up to ‘shine a light’ on the great women of the IDB Energy team.
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) works to improve lives in Latin America and the Caribbean, aiming to achieve development in a sustainable, climate-friendly way. Through financial and technical support, the bank works to reduce poverty and inequality, help improve health and education and advance infrastructure. The Bank’s current focus areas include three development challenges — social inclusion and inequality, productivity and innovation, and economic integration — and three cross-cutting issues — gender equality and diversity, climate change and environmental sustainability, and institutional capacity and the rule of law.
To kick off the Lights on Women LAC Edition, The FSR and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) teamed up to ‘shine a light’ on the great women of the IDB Energy team.
With their work, IDB Energy team contributes to improving and applying solid energy policies and regulations, using a multidisciplinary approach and their expertise.
We asked the team to answer two questions:
What do you like the most about working at IDB, in the energy sector?
What role should the IDB have, as a multilateral development bank, in gender and energy issues?

Virginia Snyder
The energy sector is exciting and what the energy sector can do for the development of Latin America and the Caribbean is even more exciting. It is a privilege and a great opportunity to work at the IDB and be able to contribute to improving lives.
The fact that there still about 22 million people without access to electricity and that many millions more are still cooking with biomass and other fuels is a reason to work hard. And the fact that the woman are the most affected is very close to my heart. Additionally, if we add that half of the population (women) are not part of the mathematical equation to change this reality, it is another reason for the gender issue to be part of all our operations and in the dialogue with the countries of the region. I feel fortunate to be able to contribute as an IDB team member, to reduce the gender gap in the region. The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean have a long way to go in terms of gender equity and the energy team and the entire IDB is 100% committed with the cause.
El sector de energía es apasionante y todo lo que la energía puede hacer para el desarrollo de America Latina y el Caribe es aún más. Es un privilegio y una gran oportunidad poder trabajar en el BID y poder contribuir a mejorar vidas. El hecho que aún hay 22 millones de personas que no tienen acceso a la energía eléctrica y que muchos millones más aún siguen cocinando con biomasa y otros combustibles en una razón para trabajar mucho. Y en esto la mujer es la principal afectada. Adicionalmente, si se le suma que la mitad de la población (las mujeres) no son parte de la ecuación para poder cambiar esta realidad es otro motivo más para que el tema de género sea parte de todas nuestra operaciones y en el diálogo con los paises de la region. Me siento afortunada de poder contribuir como miembro del BID, a reducir la brecha de género en la region. Los paises de America Latina y el Caribe tienen mucho por delante en temas de equidad de género y el equipo de energía y todo el BID está 100% comprometido con el tema.

Working in the Energy Division has been a great opportunity for me, not only because I enjoy the teamwork and atmosphere, but also because of how much I learn and empower my expertise every day.
What I like the most is that I feel that, in some way, we contribute with the improvement of the energy sector in Latin America and with the development and social inclusion in our countries. I value and support the IDB’s efforts to promote projects that encourage gender inclusion inclusive activities, as they will contribute to balancing and diversifying the sector.
Trabajar en la División de Energía ha sido una gran oportunidad para mí, no solo porque disfruto del trabajo en equipo y el buen clima laboral, sino también por como enriquezco mi experiencia a diario. Lo que más me gusta es que siento que, de alguna manera, contribuimos con la mejora del sector energético en América Latina y con el desarrollo e inclusión social en nuestros países. Valoro y comparto el impulso que le está brindando el BID a los proyectos que consideran actividades de inclusión de género ya que contribuirán a equilibrar y diversificar el sector.

I have witnessed the importance of energy for the health, education and industry sectors, as well as for community wellbeing. I feel that working in the Energy Division I am contributing to the development of the Latin American countries and to improve their citizens’ quality of life. I really like to do so working with a team of professionals like the IDB. Right now, we are very willing to take on the challenge of achieving gender equity in the sector. To do this, we must raise awareness, demonstrating with facts and numbers, the advantages of incorporating more women in the energy sector.
He sido testigo de la importancia de la energía para la salud, la educación, la industria y el bienestar de las comunidades en general. Por esto, trabajando en la División de Energía siento que aporto mi granito de arena al desarrollo de los países en Latinoamérica y a la mejora de la calidad de vida de sus ciudadanos. Y, me gusta mucho hacerlo de la mano de un equipo de profesionales como el del BID, con un gran nivel de calidad humana. Ahora mismo, estamos asumiendo con muchas ganas el reto de lograr equidad de género en el sector. Para ello, tenemos que concientizar, demostrando con hechos y números, las ventajas de incorporar más mujeres en el sector energía.

What I like the most about working at the IDB’s Energy Division is the opportunity to see first-hand the impact that our operations have on vulnerable groups such as indigenous people, the Afro — Colombian communities and women.
Throughout the energy sector projects that we finance in the region, we can ensure that the gender dimension is incorporated in the design of the operations and to make sure that women are benefited throughout the implementation phase.
Lo que más me gusta de trabajar en la división de Energía del BID en Colombia es poder ver de primera mano el impacto que tienen los proyectos de energía en las comunidades menos favorecidas tales como grupos indígenas, comunidades afrocolombianas y en las mujeres. A través de los proyectos de energía que financiamos en los diferentes países de la región podemos asegurarnos que estos incorporen la dimensión de genero desde su estructuración y asegurarnos que las mujeres sean beneficiarias durante su implementación.

Working at the IBD, in particular in the Energy Division, has been a wonderful journey, both professionally and personally. The incredibly talented team of people at headquarters and country offices attest that we all share the same profound commitment and unwavering mission: improving the quality of lives in Latin America and the Caribbean. Challenges happen every day but we keep pushing forward. When our projects deliver that light the electrification that will make children study better and improve women’s daily lives, it brightens my day. The Bank has still a long way to go to have a true gender equality but we have made tremendous progress in raising awareness and this is the first step in the right direction.
Trabajar en el Banco, y en particular en la División de Energía, ha sido una aventura increíble, desde el punto de visto profesional y personal. El talento humano de las personas trabajando en la sede y las oficinas de países atestan que todos nosotros compartimos el mismo profundo compromiso y inquebrantable misión: mejorar la calidad de las vidas en América Latina y el Caribe. Desafíos ocurren cada día pero continuamos empujando and cuando nuestros proyectos resultan en dar luz a los niños para estudiar y a las mujeres para mejorar su vida cotidiana, esto es lo más gratificante. El Banco tiene todavía mucho por hacer para llegar a la igualdad de género, pero ya ha realizado tremendo progreso en concientizar and esto es el primer paso en la dirección correcta.
