I’m excited to welcome the 12th cohort of Lightspeed’s Annual Summer Fellowship. I’m personally excited about this year’s cohort not only because it will be my first year leading the program but because the quality of this year’s Summer Fellows is one of the best we’ve had in the 12 years of the program. This was another very competitive year to get into the Fellowship: Out of nearly 300 applications from top schools across US and Canada, we accepted 8 teams, comprising of 25 students.
This year’s cohort is a very diverse and accomplished group. 56% of students come from minority backgrounds and 24% are from under-represented minority groups. They come from schools like Stanford, Harvard, Berkeley, Cornell, MIT, Prairie A&M. The teams are also working on very diverse ideas, ranging from building a civic engagement platform connecting citizens to elected representatives to a diagnostics company developing at-home blood tests. Another team is building a platform helping companies scale online marketplaces while another is building an augmented-reality dating app.
Reading through hundreds of applications and learning about aspiring young entrepreneurs’ incredible accomplishments has been the most rewarding and humbling part of the experience for me thus far. This year’s class is exceptional in this regard as well. Here are some of the individual highlights:
- Stanford University Class President
- Fulbright scholar at Harvard University
- Public Forum Debate State Champion of California
- Winner of TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon
- TEDx Speaker
- Nominee for the World Technology Award in New York
- Participant in two BMX racing world championships
These budding student entrepreneurs arrive at Lightspeed on June 18th and will be onsite for 10 weeks. We have designed a comprehensive curriculum with weekly classes, social activities, advisor hours, and matched each team with a Lightspeed partner to help them bring their ideas to fruition. I can’t wait for the program to start!
