10 Steps to Making Money Doing What You Love.
Yes, I know, cliche title, probably clickbait, but stick with me here because this post might actually be helpful to you if you already clicked and made it this far.
Now before we get into listing items that might seem like shortcuts to the Holy Grail of living a creative life, I want to say that the things I’m about to list are by no means THE only way to do this. They’re things I’ve learned over the years and it’s what has been working for me. A lot of different people have different ways so please feel free to do some more research into the topic to make informed enough decisions for yourself.
Let’s dive right into it.
Step 01
STUDY all you can about your skill or interest. I don’t think there’s any other thing I can say about this point but that. Whatever you want to do in life at this point, there’s probably someone else who has already done it in one form or the other. The internet is your friend so try as much as you can to expose yourself to as much information as you can find. If possible, get yourself a mentor and understudy them (if you do, be ready to take on all the shit that comes with it sometimes, it builds you up)
Step 02
level up your skill and keep leveling up through the process. Practice, research, pray, learn, repeat. Do all you can to step up your skill and keep at it.
Step 03
Become so good at what you do, that you can’t be ignored. Alternatively, find the gaps in the space you exist in and fill it up. Compete where there’s little to no competition. One question you can ask yourself and keep asking is “what is everybody doing and what can I do differently? what’s the difference I bring to the competition?”
Step 04
Go back to learning. Learn about the business of the skill or interest you’re interested in. Lol. Very important. Learn about the business of selling the skill, but also learn about the business of the businesses, individuals, or entities that might need the skill you’re selling. Believe it or not, EVERY SKILL is marketable, the problem is finding the right way to do it.
Step 05
Steadily increase your revenue. While you think of increasing your revenue/charge, be sure to match it with the VALUE you provide. Build case studies & continuously provide results; making each new one better than the previous.
Step 06
Treat yourself as a business and track all your finances (all income, all expenditure, all profits, and all losses) Yes, losses. It’s not all roses and beans. It’s tough out here so brace yourself. Keep separate bank accounts, pay yourself a fixed salary (especially freelancers) track everything and anything and make informed decisions with this data. Also, learn about personal finance and finance in general
Step 07
Set financial goals with timelines. Before we do this, let’s answer a few questions.
- How much does it cost to live your life?
- How much profit do you want to make vs how much profit do you need to make?
- How much can you realistically make?
- How much would you want to make in the year? (divide it into months, then weeks, then days. write it down somewhere visible. Mine is on a sticky note on my wall)
- What potential blockers are you likely to face and how can you solve them?
- In an ideal world, what resources would you need to be able to make this journey easier for you?
- That number floating around in your mind might seem impossible, but don’t be scared by it but rather ask yourself how you’d be able to get there. You’d be surprised by the answers you find.
Step 08
Invest all profits with a plan. Inflation is very real so don’t allow your money to just sit down in an account doing nothing. Especially amounts you know you won’t need in about a year. Let your money work for you no matter how small it is. One other thing to note is to never increase your standard of living too much if you start making some extra money. Sort out your basic needs plus a sprinkle of luxury once in a while, but keep your spending in check and save/invest the rest.
Step 09
Repeat steps 1–8
Step 10
At this point, chances are, you won’t be in love with what you started with anymore and that’s okay. If you did your learning well, the knowledge will serve you well in the next chapter of your career. Feel free to switch lanes and start all over again but this time, you have more leverage.
Now obviously the actual work on the ground involves more than just these 10 steps because learning about the experience and experiencing the experience are two very different things. Truth is, also these things take time but if you do your foundational work right, there would come a time when you experience exponential growth. If it takes you 5 years to make your first 100,000 the next 100,000 might come in under a year.
Now run along and be great! If you found this information helpful, share it with a friend. Let’s all be great together.
