Life Is But A Dream?

I can remember the first time I heard this song sung in rounds, with the second group beginning the first line as the leading group finished. I was in Mrs. Jones’ class room, and the big kids, the fourth-graders, came in to sing to us. I thought they were so connected, so syncopated; they were the Children’s Choir of Some Important City! Later I discovered that singing “Row Your Boat”, in rounds or not, is easy. It looks and sounds intricate and well-rehearsed, but it’s child’s play.
Most classic children’s songs have dark origins, such as “Ring around the Roses”, or “London Bridge Is Falling Down”, but this song has a beautiful message. It sounds like it’s about hard work, the constant rowing. Sure, but gently? Not exactly. It’s about smart, thoughtful work. Every oarsman knows that the oar shouldn’t make a splash.
