Issue #2 — Understory

This issue’s theme — subtext — was the product of a lazy, hazy autumn day. On a particularly warm day at Gasworks Park we felt an urge to understand subtext. How do our fears & hopes converge into what we say at this moment? How do our perspectives shape what we hear, and what we ignore?
We appreciated the analogy of the forest canopy and understory to the words we speak and the words we leave out. A canopy — imagine greenery above seen from miles away, and the ease which the dancing leaves grab our attention. These are the words we can say and we are eager to share. The understory — where flora & fauna share space, nourishment is provided, and where daily magic occurs. These are all the words we can’t express, prefer not to share, or deliver without intention.
Along with the amazing essays, poems, and fiction pieces, we wanted to tell the story of an individual who is curious about the inaccessible. The foundation of this mini story provides a transition from canopy to understory, from spoken to unspoken.
