drew’s theory & ill chill- golden [guest review]

Miami based Mindstep mainstay Drew’s Theory teams up with LA’s own Ill Chill to build two tracks of vibey effervescence, aptly titled Golden. Where some hip hop / dubstep collaborations result in one camp overshadowing the other, this particular collision of coasts toes the line, threads the needle, walks the razor’s edge. This is not Ill Chill’s first rodeo: — his list of collaborators includes such foundational producers as Truth, DMVU, Sqz Me, and Anex. His monotonic style is the perfect compliment to Drew’s heavily melodic Caribbean influenced beats. “Light Years” lets the producer step to the fore, showcasing his flawless arrangement and weighty sub while Ill Chill fills in the gaps left between bars. Golden gives the rapper a chance to exercise his chops over a bed of ominous synths and head-nodding percussion, whose combination results in a call to action to live in the moment and take control of destiny. Because of this versatility, Golden is equally suited to late night road trips and the dark recesses of warehouse parties. We can only hope to hear more collaborations between these two giants of the bass music scene in the future.

Golden is available now.
