kial- continuum [free download]
Good music isn’t defined solely by technical prowess and masterful production. In the most powerful music, such aspects are masked by the emotional resonance they elicit. The deciding characteristic is an intimacy invoked in the listener. The tracks we love speak to us, sometimes literally: as a writer, my favorite songs and mixes tend to inspire words. But our newest free download from Kial remarkably stirred lucid visual imagery. This timelapse comes close.
“Continuum” is defined as a continuous sequence in which adjacent elements are not perceptibly different from each other, although the extremes are quite distinct — like the sunset sequence that Kial’s tune brought to mind. It’s an apt title for a track that transfixes transience and permanence with such vivid sonic clarity. Kial elaborates on the production of “Continuum”:
“I recorded or synthesized every sound in the tune minus the hi-hat and vocal sample. The kick drum comes from smacking an 18-gallon storage bin, with a microphone inside. And the claps come from…..clapping, at different distances from the mic. The 12 or so clap track recordings were layered on top of each other, compressed graciously together, and shuffled around throughout the track to achieve the various clap sounds.”
