With digital music and internet streaming comes unprecedented access to a massive collection of music. The average fan has virtually unlimited access to an infinite array of sounds, without ever paying a penny. For artists, this intensifies the pressure to always create something “new”. Today’s music fans are so bored of sonic convention that they even coined a genre for the state of genrelessness they seem to strive for: “Future Bass”. Still, it’s somewhat unsurprising that today’s most original, imaginative producers don’t only acknowledge genre lines and song structure — they respect it. As any delinquent would tell you, one must understand the rules in order to break them.

Lory Kong celebrates dubstep’s past, present, and future in our latest free download. “Future and Past” rings of the primal danceability associated with jungle — one of dubstep’s greatest influences. The track proves the underappreciated potential for originality within prescribed conventions. It is a testament to dubstep’s regard for tradition, and its reputation for breeding bass music’s most uniquely sophisticated talent. Most importantly, “Future and Past” is fun. Notably, the vocal sample used in the track is actually the voice of Lory Kong himself.

The Texas-based artist recently earned a spot in America’s blossoming legacy with a headlining appearance alongside Durandal at Sub.mission’s Electronic Tuesdays.
