5 Creative Crafts You Can Make During Quarantine
Where to Start
Now that we have more time at home, we can pick up new hobbies and focus on our own self-care. One of the best ways to self-care is to do things you love — maybe it's crafting. Here are some crafts you can take on yourself!
Origami
Origami is a great therapeutic way to be relaxed while creating something special. In the picture above is a jar of puffy stars. You can make these puffy stars by either buying the pre-cut paper strips at an Asian stationery store (or Amazon) or you can cut your own paper strips as well.
After making the star by folding the strip, be sure to point the ends very tightly so it looks like a star. Then, you can take an empty jar with a cork lid and fill it with a bunch of stars. You can also add LED lights or even money if you plan to give it to someone.
This craft is perfect as a handmade gift completely made as you. If you plan to keep it yourself, it’s a cute decoration that doesn’t take up much space. Overall, it would be both therapeutic to make, maybe while listening to your favorite jams, and results in a great addition to your room decor.
Clay Models/Keychains
This is another cool idea you can make at home for little to no cost! You can buy clay from the store (I would recommend any type of polymer clay or baking clay from your local craft store or if you don’t want to spend too much, you can purchase the paper clay from Daiso) or you can make your own clay using flour, salt, and water with food coloring (there are probably different recipes online you can find as well!).
You can mold the clay into different things such as those animals in the picture above. If you want to make it into a keychain, simply add a metal hook or create one out of clay before the model hardens or before you bake it. If you want to take an extra step, you can glaze the model with a mod-podge or glaze for clay.
Homemade Masks
Masks are a great creation to make right now. You can make them for yourself, family members, or friends. Many hospitals don’t have enough N95 masks. We can make our own cloth masks to save the N95 masks for those who are working at the frontlines. You can also organize your own mask drive to donate masks to others as well. You can take an old shirt or cloth and cut out a rectangle shape or the shape you see in the picture above. You’ll also need two rubber bands. You can use a hot glue gun or sew everything together.
Paint an Item Around Your House
If you have any plain items around your house like plant holders or a bag, you can take some acrylic paint and paint them! This is such an easy project where you can be as creative as you want. You can also paint on a canvas. My friend and I painted on a canvas of faceless figures. This is an easy, aesthetic way to create a self-portrait or a portrait of your friends.
Create Your Own Plant
You can make your own minimalistic-looking plants by taking some jars such as a mason jar you found around your house. Fill the jar with water. You can rock minerals to add some color to your jar or keep it simple. Keep in mind that these plants won’t last long unless you put plant food. If you want to make your plant more long-lasting, use soil instead of water and water it often; however, if you want your plant to look as similar to the picture above, you can replace the plant each week or even put flowers in it instead. Overall, all these crafts are meant to be therapeutic and ultimately allow you to be creative and relaxed during quarantine.
