Living in a totally different environment is never an easy thing. Choosing to study abroad is the biggest thing I have made and, now, I have already been in UCSB for about one month. The thing I have learned is self-reliance, managing all my daily stuffs on my own.

When I was in China, I don’t have to worry about a lot of things because my mother would do them for me such as doing laundries, cooking, making beds… However, things change when I am living by myself. I need to manage my time on my own. In the past, every night my mother would push me into my bed if I stayed late after 12 o’clock. Now, no one would shout at me if I stay late so I sometimes sleep at 2 or 3 am. Every night before sleep I would set an alarm to make sure that I can wake up on time the next morning. However, in the past, my mother would wake me up by calling me, making sure I am awake. One day night I played with my friends until 2:10 am and I was too sleepy that I forgot to set the alarm.Waking up at 9 am in the morning, I missed my section on 8 am. I would lose some points on the attendance because of my in-caution and the one to blame is myself. After that, I realized that I shouldn’t depend on other people because I am the one that need to be responsible to myself.

In conclusion, I learned to be responsible to myself by realizing that I should manage my time well when I am living alone without my parents in the U.S.
