Gender Role: Education

There are a lots gender roles in society, many Chinese want a boy instead of a girl, so they treat the boy way better than the girl if they have a boy and a girl at the same time. In ancient China, female has three obedience and four virtues. They must obey their father, husband and son, in addition of morality, modest manner, proper speech and diligent work. An old-fashioned saying that a female without talents and knowledge is virtuous, so only male can go to school in the past.
Fortunately, women can go to school and have freedom nowadays, but there is still gender stereotype such as male is good at math and they will work in science, engineering and technical field while female is good at liberal arts and they will work in business and educational field. I think this gender role has benefited me when I am applying for colleges because there is less competition for me to applying engineering while many female applied for economics, financial math and statistics, actuarial science and other liberal arts. The college of engineering in the UCSB has much more male than female, I believe other schools are like this situation too; however, this gender role did not make much difference between male and female, both must study the same courses to graduate.
On the other hand, as I search about employment among male and female engineers, I noticed that the male engineers have higher employment rate, hold higher supervisory and management position and get paid higher than female engineer. This gender role is ridiculous. Both gender engineers had paid the same amount of efforts and studied the same courses, they should be treated equally.
