According to John McWhorter’s Ted Talk called “4 reasons to learn a new language”, people can blow their mind by learning a new language. Nowadays, more and more people are learning English in order to have a better communication with the outside world, but less different languages are learning by English speakers. Instead of channeling people’s thoughts, foreign languages actually benefit people by bring people to participate in the culture of the people who speak them. This is to say, if a people want to being part of a culture, he/she needs to control the language of that culture to some degree.

On the other hand, people who can take charge of two languages are less likely to get dementia, since they are able to do multitasking. Most importantly, learning foreign languages can generate lots of fun. Every language has different words and different word orders, which may trigger people’s interests and curiosities. Since there are sufficient materials provided for people to get familiar with foreign languages, such as the classes, CDs, books, and omnipotent internets.

I wholeheartedly agree that learning a new language has so much fun. When the first time I began to learn English as my foreign language, I was shocked that every word is just composed by 26 letters in different sequences, which is much easier than Chinese words. Also, the word orders are also very different. For example, “Where did you go yesterday?” this sentence will be translated in to “You yesterday did go where?”. Is it sounds strange to an English speaker? However, these differences are the charm of languages that attracting people to find out.
