After reading the article “ Achieving Community”, I feel very shocked about the use of Tamil. Because of the caste differences, local people are unpleasant to say their own language, that’s is not so good from my perspective.

Language should not be related to the status because it represent the tradition and the culture of a place. That’s a soul of a generation. If people lose their language, their tradition and culture will dimish forever. Though English can be used in most of the place and it can provide convenience for people to live in Canada, parents should also teach them their own language. They have the right to speak English to their child at home, but their own language is also important because the language need to evolute from generation to generation. Pretending to have a high status is a stupid action. Everyone should be real so that their will be no restrict and people will have more freedom. Using only English is not absolutly free, if everyone can say both English and Tamil in that area, that will mean the real free to them.

Also, the history is the fact and the reason why the caste difference exist. People before 1960s move to the Toronto were intend to receive the higher education, but people who move to Toronto after 1960s are most have a lower educational level and doing a low-skilled jobs. And most people speak English in Toronto, so speaking Tamil become a sign of a weakness of someone. As the time goes on, Tamil will lose finally. However, some people who speak Tamil have their own way on some specific celebration, that’s one function of the language, people will be reminded through the language and they will do their own traditions in their own ways. As a result, language like Tamil should not be missed by their speakers.
