New Year Greeting

Several days ago, all the Chinese celebrate their the most important festival-Chinese New Year, so-called Lunar New Year or Spring Festival. Many countries celebrate this festival as well such as The United State and The UK. When the Chinese New Year comes, Disneyland Park in California changed the theme of activites to “Hua Mulan” and the theme of Universal Studio is “Kungfu Panda”. Although Chinese New Year is a celebrating festival, there are a lot of things need to pay attention, unless it may cause some misunderstanding.

During Chinese New Year, people usually say some special greeting to each other. the most common one is “Happy New Year”. There are also some special greeting depends on different people, for example when we usually say “万事如意” “恭喜发财” to adults, and it means “wish you achieve all goals” “make more money”. We usually say “学业有成” to children, and it means “get good grades in study”. Moreover, there are also somethings that people cannot talk about during Chinese New Year such as death because people think it may cause badness in the new year.

I saw a news several days ago, about Wen Liu who is a supermodel born in China, and had shows in Victoria Secret for many years. She posted a photo with another star and wirte “Happy Lunar New Year” on the instagram. Then when people saw this, thousands of Chinese start to criticize her. They think Chinese people should say “Chinese New Year” instead of “Lunar New Year” because Korean copy lots of festivals from China and they use Lunar New Year. But according to the announment posted by Chinese government in recent years, the term “Lunar New Year” “Chinese New Year” “Spring Festival” are all officially accepted. Therefore, I think it doesn’t matter people use which term to celebrate.
