As mentioned in the last post, EI is a skill to identify and manage your own emotions and emotions of others. Although to have a high EQ level, one has to possess certain characteristics. Most people with high EI all share some of the same traits. They include self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills.

  1. Self-awareness: A person who is self-aware has a good understand of themselves. They know their strengths and weaknesses, and will try to improve upon them.
  2. Self-regulation: These individuals also know how to control their emotions, regulate impulses and set boundaries. A high EI person will think before they react and thus, are able to control their temper and emotions. They know how to say no to others when necessary because it prevents them from getting too overwhelmed or stressed out. They balance between work and play to be efficient and live a happy life.
  3. Motivation: They set specific goals for themselves and commit with all efforts to achieve that goal. Changes and setbacks don’t intimidate them, but instead they embrace such events in life because they understand that those are inevitable in the journey to success.
  4. Empathy: Given that EI is the ability to deal with emotions, empathy is also a very important component of this skill. Empathetic people can relate to others, show compassion, and live an honest and open life. They are able to put themselves in others’ viewpoints to understand the needs and wants of others.
  5. Social Skills: Understandably, the ability to communicate effectively, build and maintain good relationships with others is almost essential in any career field. Within the business world, having to deal with other people is inevitable, thus this trait is more than ever necessary. Someone with good social skills can also manage disputes and know how to work in teams.

Personally, I have improved my EQ by trying to balance work and play. This weekend, I planned a trip to Toronto; therefore, I tried to finish school work before the trip as well as make time during the trip to make sure my assignments are complete. At the same time, I also get to explore and visit the city. Overall, EI is a skill that encompasses different characteristics, and a high EI person is a master of all.
