New Study Finds that Workspace Design Affects Happiness and Motivation

The physical workspace affects more than just productivity. A new study by Kenton Global for National Business Furniture shows that the design of the workplace contributes to mood, stress-level, and motivation. Millennials, more than any other generation, feel that the aesthetics, comfortability, and flexibility of their work environment contributes to business performance and general well-being.

These preferences and expectations are important for us to understand. Many of them don’t require hefty and expensive remodels; they can be implemented with a few small changes to make the workplace more comfortable, collaborative, and happy. Here are some of the findings.

Physical workspace affects mental well-being.

The study found that cluttered workspaces and outdated technology are two factors with the most negative effect on mood and motivation. Workers desire access to a variety of workstations; most claim they need a private office and shared breakout area. Workers also emphasize the importance of soundproof meeting rooms for sensitive conversations.

Options make people happy.

Choices are important, especially when they affect health and well-being. Comfortable chairs, stand-up desks, adjustable computer stands, and other ergonomic technologies are desirable for the current workforce.

Workspace design has an effect on productivity and happiness.

Workers spend many of hours of the day in their personal workspace, and they realize the effect that the aesthetics and ambience has on their mood and productivity. Many of those surveyed observed that their workspace contributes to stress and anxiety levels.

Millennials desire community and privacy

Millennials, more than any other generation, desire open floor plans, collaborative work environments, and also access to privacy. They desire a workplace that fosters community, with shared whiteboards, cork boards, and glass boards, but for extended focus time, they do need a quiet and private space to work.
