Smart Garbage Sorter
TL;DR: Can tech help the garbage sorting mess in Namma Bengaluru? Could Raspberry Pi 3 along with tensorflow be of help in sorting garbage?
Garbage is a menace in metro cities in India. Namma Bengaluru with its teeming population of more than 10 million has been having this crisis for a few years now. It comes to the fore when the villages near the landfills protest by stopping the dump trucks. It seems no one’s problem to solve.
One aspect of the problem has been sorting the garbage at the source. There have been education drives in the past but none seems to inculcate the discipline in the citizenry about the sorting of garbage when its created. The governance has started imposing fines in Bengaluru and it goes to see how many will fall in line to it.

See the pic ?
Sorting vegetable/fruit/food waste would be easy.
But what about tissues, dust, glass. Unless you look at the list you will drop them into the dry waste bin.
Garbage sorting at the source is too much information to process and decisions to make. Is it laziness of the people or is it something too much to ask for from them? Could technology help?
Oflate, I had been reading about image recognition and machine learning done on a raspberry pi (3) fitted with a camera to recognize trains.
Could such a contraption mounted on a garbage bin work?
You wave the article and this gadget will tell you if it’s the right bin to go into? ‘You must be Nuts Mr. Pee’ you might say after reading this. No wonder the idea’s classified under PeeNuts :).
