Ten months after the FreeDOS 1.3 RC1 release we get RC2 with added “Live CD” support. Yes, this means that you can boot into a live FreeDOS environment now!

The release announcement was published last week on SourceForge. Jim Hall explains the new “LiveCD” feature briefly:

However instead of relying on the BIOS floppy disk emulation, it uses SYSLINUX and MEMDISK to boot an emulated floppy disk. Along side support to perform a Plain and Full installation FreeDOS, this media is also able to run FreeDOS live from RAM or CD (depending on computer system and hardware) without installation to an internal hard disk drive.

The fresh FreeDOS images come in five flavors:

  • FD13-Floppy
  • FD13-FullUSB
  • FD13-LegacyCD
  • FD13-LiteUSB
  • FD13-LiveCD (containing the FD13LIVE.ISO file)

You can download them from the ibiblio FreeDOS repository.

Besides giving PC gamers a solution for playing old DOS titles, the FreeDOS project aims to help with legacy software and embedded systems as well.
