International Women’s Day is just a few days away. Every March 8, it’s a day to honor the achievements of women around the globe, while also continuing to fight for gender equality.

I consider myself a feminist, so of course, I revel in the attention gender equality gets this time of year, every year. And this year, I’d like to do a bit more than revel. This year, I want to draw attention to the long, complicated history that Black women living in America have had to deconstruct so that we can find our place and our space while also excavating our past and envisioning our futures.

It can be a messy proposition — to celebrate while simultaneously seeking to understand the pain and perverse realities upon which this nation was founded. But it’s important work — and work, I believe, that provides clarity, hope and a clear path forward.

That said, here I’ve outlined three of my favorite books that have helped me in my journey to understanding my own feminine power and to heal from gender-related traumas that have been thrust upon us as women in our current social construct.

(In addition to these, we’ll be sharing lots of additional recommendations on our Instagram page around the themes of women in business…
