You may have seen a popular Hawaiian gesture under the name of “shaka”.

There is a number of origin stories for this gesture with the most interesting
one being about a fisherman! The legend says a fisherman called Hamana Kalili had lost three fingers on one hand at a sugar plantation. After the injury he could no longer work at the factory and settled for a job as a security guard on cargo trains. His job was to check the train for freerider kids. After finishing each check he would would throw a sign to the train driver indicating everything is alright — he raised his hand with a pinky and a thumb in the air. Kids picked up on this gesture fairly quickly and spread it across the island from where the entire world has come to know it as “shaka”.
