In the latest episode of Puget Sounds Podcast, we were joined by the internationally known musician from the Puget Sound area, Andy Orozco. Together, we discussed the latest news in the music industry, shared our recent record store finds, and delved into Andy’s journey as a multi-instrumentalist.

The Impact of Musical Legends

In recent news, we have been hit with the loss of two musical legends, Sinead O’Connor and Tony Bennett. These artists have left an indelible mark on the music industry and have influenced countless musicians and fans.

When tragic events like these occur, musicians pay tribute by covering their songs. The Foo Fighters brought out Alanis Morissette to honor Sinead O’Connor.

Pink and Brandy Carlisle performed a heartfelt tribute.

These acts of respect show the deep impact these artists had on their peers and the industry as a whole. It is a reminder of the power of music to bring people together and create lasting connections.

Crate Digging: Unearthing Musical Treasures

As music lovers, we can’t resist the allure of record stores and the thrill of crate digging. Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting a pop-up record store called Upper Left Records at Salty Sea Days in Everett. I discovered some hidden gems there, including a Black Keys album featuring their covers of Junior Kimbrough’s songs. The raw energy and bluesy vibe of these tracks are a testament to the influence of Junior Kimbrough on the Black Keys’ sound.

Another treasure I found was Sturgill Simpson’s album, “The Ballad of Dude and Juanita.” Hailing from Jackson, Kentucky, Simpson infuses his music with cinematic storytelling and banjo melodies. This album, recorded in just one week, showcases Simpson’s versatility and ability to transport listeners to another time and place.

Andy Orozco: A Journey of Musical Discovery

Now, let’s turn our attention to our special guest, Andy Orozco. Andy’s musical journey began with a family heirloom, a player piano that sparked his interest in playing the piano. He quickly developed a love for ragtime and started writing his own pieces. However, the pressure of performing at a young age led him to explore other avenues, and he found himself drawn to jazz drumming.

Under a renowned bass player's guidance, Andy honed his jazz drummer skills. He had the opportunity to jam with seasoned jazz musicians, which boosted his confidence and solidified his passion for music. Jazz, emphasizing improvisation and feeling, opened up a whole new world of musical expression for Andy.

The Freedom of Jazz

One of the most significant differences Andy discovered between classical music and jazz was the freedom of expression. In classical music, adherence to sheet music is paramount, while jazz allows for interpretation and improvisation. Andy describes jazz as a genre where suggested chords guide the musicians, but they can explore different scales and play with the melody. This sense of freedom and spontaneity drew Andy to jazz and continues to inspire him as a musician.

The Impact of Music

Music has the power to transcend boundaries and connect people from all walks of life. It can evoke emotions, tell stories, and inspire change. Sinead O’Connor’s music gave hope to those who felt like outsiders, while Tony Bennett’s smooth vocals brought joy to audiences worldwide. The covers and tributes by fellow musicians serve as a testament to the lasting impact these artists have had on the industry.

Record stores, with their treasure troves of vinyl, provide a tangible connection to the past and allow us to discover new sounds and artists. The joy of crate digging and finding hidden gems is a thrill that music enthusiasts can’t resist.

Andy Orozco’s journey from piano to jazz drums showcases the transformative power of music. His exploration of different instruments and genres has shaped his unique sound and allowed him to connect with fellow musicians on a deeper level. The freedom and improvisation of jazz have given him the space to express himself and continue to grow as an artist.

The Future of Music

As we look to the future, it is clear that music will continue to evolve and inspire. Artists like Sinead O’Connor and Tony Bennett have paved the way for future generations, leaving a legacy that will be remembered for years. Exploring different genres and the fusion of musical styles will push the boundaries of what is possible in music.

Record stores will remain a haven for music lovers, offering a physical space to discover and connect with music. The resurgence of vinyl and the appreciation for the analog sound will ensure that record stores continue to thrive.

Andy Orozco's journey as a musician is far from over. With his multi-instrumental talents and passion for music, he will undoubtedly continue to create and inspire. His unique blend of jazz, rock, and other genres will captivate audiences and impact the Puget Sound music scene.

In conclusion, the power of music is undeniable. It has the ability to bring people together, evoke emotions, and inspire change.
