The seed — how ListUp was born

Our day was no different than thousands of people seeking an apartment in Mumbai, excited to commence their new journeys. There was indeed shortage of apartments for bachelors, but worse, the shortage of promises by brokers.

‘43k rent for fully furnished flat in lake homes’

‘Thats great! We’ll take it!’

Next day.

‘43k is actually for non-furnished’

‘Are you kidding me?’

The same story with almost every broker. Finally, after battling the spartan war, we were able to find an unfurnished apartment at reasonable rate at one of the best locations in Powai. Excitement was at its peak. But then, it dawned upon us — we had to furnish an enitre apartment from scratch. That’s a lot of stuff. It’s another hundred decisions to be made. We atleast narrowed down to the fact that second hand products would be a great choice; they are easy-on-the pocket and last for a reasonable time. That’s when the real problem occurred. We browsed the existing platforms and were left with even more frustration than we could have imagined.

  • Who is this guy named warehouse selling microwave? Can I trust meeting him in the first place when I am not even sure who I am talking to?
  • Do I have to go to CST to meet this random person? I really like the furniture but is it really worth the time, money and energy to go all the way from one end of the city to another? There must be someone selling good furniture near my apartment.
  • I should ask my friends who are already living here. They must have stuff I need to buy. I can trust them as well. But how do I know who is selling what?

That was enough to seed in the idea of ListUp. There are so many people faced with situations similar to what we faced and much worse.

Having worked in Japan and Singapore for a long time, we were dumbstruck by the quality of products and superior customer service and we wanted to bring the same qualities into what we were building so passionately. So we set our sights on solving this huge problem and we realised it has the potential not just to make our lives easy but also to transform our lives. Think of someone less priviledged who has been dreaming to buy books for his/her exams. What if you have it and don't need it?

“For you it may be an unused item, for her it is the dream.”

So, with our spirits held high, we began our journey of solving the problem in a way nobody is. Paying attention to details. Using technology as our strength. Providing top-notch user experience. Developing trust for our brand. Most importantly, ensuring that no one ever face what we did.

Check out what we have built so far! (Hint: You’ll love it!)

Stay tuned. A lot more is coming up!
