Here on Medium, I tend to do what American newspaper reporters unironically call “think pieces” (as though we don’t think on all of them). I write about a book, a publishing trend, or a personal experience, typically in a story that takes 4-to-7 minutes to read.

I gather briefer thoughts — often just a minute or two long — in a recurring Substack feature called Letter from a Reader that you can read for free, or without subscribing to that platform. In yesterday’s letter, I do quick hits on four topics:

  • A Jane Austen quote that’s perfect for the age of Trump
  • A story in the Economist about what makes a teacher “good”
  • A recent gay history that’s been called “a work of genius”
  • My new classic-short-stories discussion club that launches this month on Substack

Do any of these interest you? If so please check out my Letter from a Reader 3.31.25 at Jansplaining on Substack. If you’d prefer to see what I’ve written about Austen here on Medium, you can do that, too:

Thank you for reading!
