A few years ago, a journalist friend and I started a monthly short-story-reading group on Zoom partly in response to a frustration both of us had with traditional book clubs: Too many of the selections were too long, too expensive, and not worth the time we had to put into them.

That club has been so much fun I wondered if something similar might work off Zoom, or by using the comments section of a free online post. I’ve just launched one on Substack to an enthusiastic response.

Want to join us? Here’s how it works: Each month we focus a classic short story that’s available for free online and typically takes no more than an hour or so to read, often less. I post links to the full text of the story, other helpful resources, and a few thoughts to jump start your thinking about it, at times bringing in a co-host who will enrich the discussion.

“Members” just post their reactions in the comments section. There’s no fee, no required attendance, and no tolerance for self-promoters (or people I suspect of using the club to publicize their own writing or services, who will get blocked without notice). This club is for people…
