Where Have All The Quotation Marks Gone?

Too many novels are missing the mark

Have you noticed something missing from the novels you’ve read lately? Such as all the quotation marks? The novelist Lionel Shriver once wrote a provocative essay for the Wall Street Journal about the perils of a literary fad popularized by Cormac McCarthy: dropping quotations marks from lines of dialogue.
