“Look, he’s smiling, bless his heart.”
“What an idiot.”
“Well, he’s content with his life, who he is…”
“He’s no one, and tomorrow he’ll cease to exist.”
“Guys, I can hear you! What are you doing in my house? Are you — elves? It can’t be.”
“He’s frowning now, you made him frown. Maybe he can hear us. He was such a sweet little boy.”
“He’s not a sweet little boy now, is he?”
“But he thinks he is. I mean not sweet, but he means well, doesn’t he?”
“He’s a selfish coward, that’s what he is.”
“I can hear you! Who are you? Are you talking about me?”
“He believes that if he owes nothing he’s protected and life will not harm him. I sort of understand. He is alone, after all.”
“Despicable. No stockings, no tree, no gifts, no food. On Christmas Eve.”
“It is a little disconcerting. Such a sweet boy, I’m telling you. He cared for everything and everyone. Maybe he’s right to have had enough. What’s he going to eat tomorrow, on Christmas Day?”
