Skyscrapers sparkle with stars, bright city lights, steam bellows around crowded sidewalks, horns honk, people shout, icy clouds of breath fill the air with frigid haze. Shadowy faces blur past. Shoulder bumps ricochet into confusion, frenzy, surrounded by the anxiety and anger of urban hell.

Safety was back home. Country living made sense. Chaos surrounded him now, men with beards and menacing brows, frowning, scowling, snarling while exhaling smoke, fear blocked out with large silver headphones covering each ear like armor.

The armor is torn off, comforting bliss of gentle music screeches away. A sudden push leads to a shove which sends him into an alley where he is grabbed, spun, and shoved repeatedly against a brick wall before being lifted and smashed against a piss-covered dumpster, tossed down a stairwell and kicked in the gut and face, praying against death. A handful of hair yanks his head back and a cold tip pricks his throat. The blade flashes while being repositioned across his jugular. Eyes clench.

Muffled sounds of struggle proceed bodies thumping to the ground. She touches his cheek, encourages him to breathe, open his eyes. He wipes tears before taking her hand and standing gingerly, surveys the four motionless bodies strewn about, sniffles, wipes his nose and refocuses on the woman who saved his life. Her beauty is stunning, young with mature eyes that reassure him fast. She whispers into his ear, hugs him gently while lightly kissing his neck. His heart slows, relaxing quickly, each beat now spaced apart, further, loud echoes now until stopping entirely. She releases her fangs, wipes the blood from her chin, and drops his pale body before disappearing into the steamy night.
