“Have they broken the codes again?” General Ottoman asked the private.

“Sir, Chief General of the State Tulk has given the order that we no longer use code,” the private answered in a soft but clear voice. “It takes too much time on our end to put the messages through code. The enemy’s machine learning algorithm, which has taken into account every possible coding mechanism, can decipher an intercepted message in a millisecond. General Tulk said it’s not worth the time invested.”

Ottoman took a moment to internalize the private’s words. Then, looking at the man at least a decade younger than him, the General said, “It was a bit wordy, private. But I guess you answered my question in a roundabout way.”

“Well, I was afraid you were going to get mad if you didn’t have a thorough explanation.”

The General glared at the youthful man. “Now let me tell you something, Private Rogers, I can be the judge of my own actions. I really don’t need anybody else making those calls for me. When I get upset it’s simply because I’m trying to understand how…”

He was cut off by an acute, squeaky buzzing. The private rapidly spun around in his chair with precision. His superior dashed to…
