In Florida

The American archetype,
Gimlet-eyed and teeth clenched on an unlit cheroot,
Takes rough aim at an uncertain future,
And misses the mark.

America, what has become of you?

In Florida,
a buzzcut girl takes aim at a president,
with words,
and doesn’t miss,
because there’s nothing to miss.

America,
why allow the content of your character
to gutter and wane with your power?
Unless you only ever were
a market?
A daydreaming torchbearer;
A carnival grifter,
with ideas above his station,
and a
special effects budget.

America, what has become of you?
