Love Triangle

A short story in haiku

He says I love you
A long silence fills the air
She types a reply

She says I love you
He looks up from his smartphone
And thinks of a lie

The anguish of love
In all its myriad forms
Caught between two lives

One, a spark, lighting
Pages of a new story
Yet to be written

The other a fire
Wild, raging out of control
Smoke and ash prison

Please tell me truly
She confronts their division
Do you still love me?

The pain is knowing
No is the honest answer
If not the whole truth

Years spent together
Commitment and survival
Maintain connection

Those threads have worn thin
The tie is nearly severed
Re-stitch or cut loose?

Happiness arrives
One day, unexpectedly
A newfound friendship
