“But I don’t even like boys,” wailed the little girl. “Why can’t I play outside instead?”

“This is important,” said the mother. “One day you’ll grow up, and boys will come calling at your door, and you’ll need to know how to properly season them. Now,” she clicked a claw against the spice rack: “Nutmeg, or clove?”

The little girl huffed, dragging her feet to the table. “I don’t like boys,” she grumbled again. “They’re too stringy.”
