Patiently Waiting

Tender morning stillness
On the couch by the window — the air
Lifting me up at every breath,
Sending me into this day:
Quiet, patient, knowing.

Streets lined with empty cars,
Burnishing a cinnamon glow under
Little sparrows laced on the nearby mango tree.
Just birds,
Singing away against
The gentle hum of the TV newsman,
Reciting something I should probably know about
According to him.

And I can almost hear the
Breezy sighs from my rusty fan,
Wind billowing on my forehead —
A coolness dancing
Between brows bent above my face
Surrendered to this
Endless waking dawn.

And I know,
As soon as the rest of the sunbeams
On the horizon break,
And the bustling of the day is renewed,
I must swallow all bitterness
And plunge
Into the raging boredom of living,
Where I know I will find these moments:
Quiet, patient, waiting.
