Pulled Apart

Nerves unsheathed, your mind
rewired to wander, and seek
risks and adventure, the thrill
propelling you outward still
playing tug-of-war with your destiny
half-heartedly, knowing we’d lose
in sadness, and emptiness, adrift
to find happiness in our pain
through long and gradual years
as nature, changed you too rapidly
and the slow and lumbering ache
burrowed deep into our hearts
preparing us until that day
the cab would appear too soon
for hurried hugs, with hearts heavy
we drove away, waving tears …

… we were pulled apart
