He remembered a squeal of hot rubber on asphalt, the road spitting up a dust storm, a thud, a screech of metal. Most of all, he remembered the eyes, brown as damp forest soil, wide as the sky, when his car slammed into hers.

He supposed he had died. He wondered if she had lived.
