I remember the days filled with laughter
when we ran and played under the guava trees
and clapped and danced under a full moon.
While we sat by the smoky fires and told stories
and laughed and loved with open hearts.

I remember the days passed in harmony
when we hoed and turned the sweet damp soil
and worked and sang in unison.
While the maize grew and the beans ripened
and we, with smiling faces, filled our empty sacks.

I remember the days passed in bliss
when we scrubbed clean and put on our Sunday best
and sat in the front pew at mass.
While we listened and learned and prayed
and we, with refreshed faith, walked back home.

I long to be a child again,
unstained by the evil of this world,
to laugh and run and play
While sucking on a ripe juicy mango,
and sit at Grandma’s feet to sing old rhymes.

Our childhood is the most nostalgic of memories (competing only with forgotten love 😃).

Dedicate to all the children growing up in the richness of Mother Africa’s soil
