She
Every morning she wakes and busies herself, quiet and careful not to disturb anyone. Pottering around, anticipating what the day has to offer. Goes about Eating her breakfast wearing pyjamas. Picking at her food, nibbling slowly. Using cutlery like a lady of the sixteenth century. Each bite, agonisingly slow, as she chews the appropriate amount of times. A balanced diet of fruits, carbohydrates, vegetables, meats, and dairy. Although she loves cakes, desserts, ice-cream, chocolates, and lollies she knows they are unhealthy and to be consumed in moderation — the same goes for fast food.
When finished eating she usually picks out a matching outfit, coordinating colours and patterns, taking into consideration what she will be doing, and the season and type of weather to be expected.
She dresses in her uniform today.
It’s Thursday and she has an important meeting and presentation. Thoroughly prepared for both and excited. Because she works hard educating herself.
Her nails are worn down to the stubs as she sits at her desk, picking at them. Addicted to bitting her fingertips and toes.
Yes, she can easily get her foot to her mouth.
Nervous with what feels like the weight of the world on her shoulders. She wants to impress at her meeting, wants her presentation to go well. It’s a high-pressure environment and has her worried. As she doubts herself and hopes for approval, she’s doodling on the top corner of her notes because she likes to draw.
Hearing her name being called, she realises it’s time to focus. She’s up.
Standing, she gathers her notes.
Her long, silky hair swings as she walks, and she is admired. Marvelled at, and looked up to. Astounds people with her language and attention to detail, with her phenomenal memory.
Taking a deep breath, she looks at her audience.
Confident, well-spoken, she is in her element. Captivating her audience.
The presentation gets a round of applause and she answers any final questions.
As her popularity soars, her caring nature ensures she is loved by all. Affectionate and with friends both male and female, she is succeeding in life.
Sitting back down in her place, she listens to the other speakers. Whilst her stomach rumbles. I wish it was lunchtime already. Her mind is ticking. It is hard to focus on the now. She needs to learn to switch off because it takes her so long to unwind and calm, to be restful and sleep at night. The dreams she has, often and vivid bother her. Like when she’s worrying about the end of the world because she doesn’t want to die. She wants to live forever.
And she is only five years old.
