The Burden of Eating Cake

Around my neck
I wear the frayed ends
of unraveled alibis which
I have rewoven
to suit my conscience.

How unfortunate,
as I eat my cake,
each dirty crumb dropped
on my phony napkin
tightens the grip
around my throat until
I choke with regret.
