That afternoon, filming of the Sunset Matinee began.
No one knew what the movie was about or what they were supposed to be doing. Grady simply walked through the crowd telling one group that they were robotic pirates encircling a Martian castle, telling another that they were beatnik werewolves who’d traveled into the future in a magical boxcar.
The actors tried to make sense of it all at first, but eventually succumbed to the madness and played out their roles however they chose. Wes, Jason, and Doug chased Grady around with their phones and pawn shop cameras, trying to capture the action. Everyone was too busy and confused to notice Denny moving through the crowd with his own camera on his secret errand.
Filming was nearly finished when Momma stepped out of the trailer with her hair curled up beautifully and her best, blue-flowered shirt on. Everyone in the park erupted in applause.
“Is there still time to be in the movie?”
Grady reached out his hand and helped her down the stairs. “Of course, Momma. I kept a role just for you. You’re Esmerelda, Queen of the Dancing Gypsies, bearer of the Jewel of the Tamarand.”
Momma laughed. “Sounds very pretty, honey, but I’m not sure what any of that means.”
“It means whatever you want it to mean, Momma.”
Production went on into nightfall. At various stages, when the cameramen needed to recharge their devices or change film, the show just went on without them. And after things had wrapped, people just kept right on playing.
At some point after dark, Grady and Denny exited the scene. It was announced that they were beginning editing right away, and that they were not to be disturbed. Their bedroom curtain remained illuminated throughout the night.
After it got very late and most everyone had gone to bed, riotous laughter could be heard coming from inside.
