Grady, Momma, and Denny had gone inside after the auditions were completed. They ate dinner and sat around the table playing board games. It was almost midnight by the time they decided to call it a wrap. Momma tucked both the boys into bed. Denny complained a little about it. Grady just laughed.
She sat on the edge of his bed, brushing his hair back with her hand. “Do you want to know some more about your father? I know I never said much about him.”
“What are you talking about, Momma? You called him a bastard almost every day for my whole life.”
They both stifled their laughter so that they didn’t stir Denny, who’d already nodded off in the bed on the other side of the room.
“Well, if there’s anything at all you’d like to know,” Momma said, “just ask.”
“He left us when you were pregnant with Denny, right?”
“That’s all I need to know about him.”
Momma smiled and kissed his forehead.
After she’d closed the door, Grady lay stiffly in the bed a few moments to make sure Denny was really sleeping. When the rhythmic breathing didn’t change, he buried his face into his pillow and whimpered against the pain.
