When there was you,
Laughter ricocheted between rooms
Like some flying gift.
Now that you’re a was,
It’s labor behind a shovel to hear that laugh.

When there was you,
Little curiosities flowed with abandon.
Now that you’re a was,
I have to hunt them down myself.

When there was you,
Questions started with Now tell me,
And the interviewee was the most important person in all the land.
Now that you’re a was,
I suppose I’ll have to ask the questions.

I tell myself to remember
Even though I am here to remember how it was,
I’m a was too
Even though I’m right here
Because I was
With you.
