World I Was

Even when I’m old and gray —
when wrinkles hide the bloom of youth
that greeted each sunrise
and creeping dusk
Even when I’m old and gray —
my mind less sharp
my tongue delayed
my body frayed by all the life I’ve lived
Even when I’m old and gray —
I’ll catch the words
that flutter past
and cage them on the page
with wit and pen.
And when at last I’m old and gray —
(god willing, I will reach that day)
I’ll look with wonder on the world I was.
