Project Spotlight- Hands Free Texting and Easy Shopping
The projects from LITAS this year deal with every aspect of life: homework, vacation, adventure, games, and, as you will see today with Rachel and Kritika’s work, even safe driving and efficient shopping!
Hands-Free Texting (Rachel- 9th Grade)
- What it does: Automatically Senses when you’re driving and sends a text message back to whoever calls you, no hands needed!
- Based on Acceleration and Velocity
- Tools: AppInventor
Most people receive text messages while driving and want to respond, so they multitask texting and driving. While this may be tempting, it is unsafe for those on the road. Here’s a solution. As Rachel says, “Not only doe get the job don my app provide a hands free safer environment, but also it gets the job done.” The app is designed so that it will be able to tell if you are driving if you reach certain speeds and accelerations. Then, if you receive a text message, it will automatically send back a reply saying that you’re driving and will talk later. Help keep our roads safe by downloading this app. Thanks to Rachel’s design, we can save lives lost to texting and driving each year.
Deal Shopping (Kritika- 6th Grade)
- What it does: Helps users find the best deal available locally on any given item
- Browses hundreds and shops and stores
- Tools: AppInventor, Tiny WebDB
Websites like Amazon have made it very easy to shop online, but there’s an entirely different sort of fun in going out to local shops and buying things yourself, especially when you’re getting a great deal! Kritika’s app helps users find the best price from local stores for any item of their choosing. Her app uses Tiny WebDB to store all the different prices of items nearby and deliver them to users quickly so they can browse before they buy. Wow! I’m looking forward to downloading this app before sales later on this year.
Two more great examples of the projects going on right now! The LITAS girls have accomplished so much this year and I’m very proud of them. I hope you’re as excited as I am to see their presentations at the Tech Showcase!
