After a long day…

Thoughts rain down
half-baked, ephemeral;
I raise a hand, slowly
fighting against gravity —
to hold them,
to pin them down,
to feel their contours,
drown in the sound of them;
words escape my mouth,
calling out to these thoughts,
hoping to catch the Muse’s gift,
to fashion an apt phrase,
to draw out a story line,
but they escape like the wind
before my fingers
can touch them;
exhausted, I sink back
into the couch,
eyes close,
body wins over mind,
Sandman works his magic,
erasing weariness
in deep sleep
