Avoidance

How long have I known who you are,
what you are, and have been afraid?
I hide from you in the dark
protected by uneasy dreams:

visions to distract my mind
from gravity preordained.

Yet darkness gives a voice to fear
as blindness gives fear to sight —
(at least the blind are still aware,)
and night gives way to darkest night.
