Afterthought

As he walked away, his arms full of boxes and memories,
he stopped suddenly, turned around,
and said,
“I fell in love with you the first time that I heard you laugh.
Did I ever tell you that?”
There was no weeping
no gnashing of teeth.
There was only, “Be well” and “Goodbye”
and then, after he was gone,
a whisper into the silent air,
“No. Not once.
You never once told me that.”
